As a recruiter, nothing pains me more than a hiring manager that just looks for bullet points and keywords in order to initiate a conversation with a candidate. Being a veteran and knowing something about the veteran candidate's skills, leadership and potential to be a great part of a company is not enough. The hiring manager will not look at the candidate beyond the tailored resume, that hurts the company and the candidate.

Great article, shared this on LinkedIn. Pete is right, we struggle with tailoring our resume to the job that we are applying to. But I also think that too many hiring managers won't look past the resume or feel that it will be easier to get the hiring approval if the resume says exactly what the job posting is asking for.

The first impression is what counts... though we say don't judge a book by its cover. The reality that is what we do, sometimes we'll look at the outline or synopsis of the book. That is what the resume is. It is a breakdown of you from a professional point of view. But like a book it must be tailored to its audience. Many Veterans do not know how to write for a civilian audience.
