Thanks fro reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on May 19, 1943 that Adolf Hitler launched Operation Alaric, the German occupation of Italy in the event its Axis partner either surrendered or switched its allegiance. It was a prescient move since Italy switched sides the next year.
The Germans tied down significant allied forces and capability until VE-day.

Germany had to react quickly when the Italians surrendered to the Allies discreetly because they did so on condition of becoming a belligerent on the Allies' side. The Germans flowed through Brenner's Pass and established a fighting line at Naples. They held off the Allies for almost 2 years until the surrender.
