If you look at it, there was really one world war in two parts separated by about 20 years. The Paris "Peace Talks" following the first part made the second war all but inevitable. There is an excellent book about the Paris Peace Talks titled "Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World" by Margaret MacMillan. I urge you to read it. The hubris and arrogance of the victors was on full display as they thoughtlessly carved up bankrupt empires and created new national boundaries without any attention to important tribal and cultural factors. In so doing they set the stage for World War II and for the long-term problems still plaguing Europe and the Middle East.
