While out hiking in my neighborhood this afternoon I came across a huge crew setting up to film some of the battle scenes for a movie, no more than 1/2 mile from my house. They already have a half dozen tanks, and a war ravaged Afghan village set up. It's bizarre to say the least.
Apparently, they've been filming this movie by Jerry Bruckheimer, throughout New Mexico for the last month or so. Based on a book by Doug Stanton, the story revolves around a band of elite special forces and CIA operatives who secretly invaded Afghanistan post-9/11 on horseback and helped Afghan fighters capture the city of Mazar-i-Sharif and topple the Taliban. It stars Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon.

Only thing I didn't much care for was the SS runes. Some shit makes you just say WTF were they thinking with that as a back drop.

The use of the SS shows that someone knew nothing about military history or thought no one would notice. Sort of destroys any credibility they might have had

From what I have read on this group the SS "twin lightning bolts" stand for Scout Snipers. It is very unfortunate that they did not look into the World War II history of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich Nazi Germany. The SS-Runen emblem is not something most of us would want to be associated with today. Schutzstaffel (SS) Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler was the head of the SS troops which included the Waffen-SS and the SS concentration and death camp guards. The SS emblem on their flag was not well thought out before they used it on the flag.

CSM Richard StCyr - There are very few WW II veterans still with us today for us to learn of their experience in the war. My father was a WW II veteran but I lost him years ago. I was stationed in Germany 1969-1971 when I met with the German WW II veterans and that was twenty four years after the war ended. Those veterans are probably gone now. One of them died while I was still in Germany. He was a family member of my girlfriend and his relatives gave me his helmet that he had managed to keep since the end of the war. A small piece of WW II history.

SPC Woody Bullard - That's an awesome artifact, and it looks like you take good care of it. Looks like the old guy was a Luftwaffe veteran by the Eagle decal, I bet it was interesting to hear the history from the German Soldiers perspective.
Our attic is full of uniforms and war trophies that were given to me as a kid in the 70's by my Dads buddies and my uncles. I had to promise not to sell them and I've held to it. Being around them caused me to read a lot of history about the war so I could ask better questions and get more out of the stories and it kept me out of trouble.

CSM Richard StCyr - The helmet is still in good condition considering it's age.
Although he was not a pilot he was stationed at a Luftwaffe airfield in Germany as part of
a security company to protect the aircraft. He said they had Messerschmitt 109 and
Focke-Wulf 190 Wurger fighter aircraft at the airfield. He told me near the end of the war
in 1945 most of the fighter aircraft had been destroyed in combat and the ones left on the
ground could not fly because they could not get replacement parts for repair work. Some of the fighter pilots and ground crew left the airfield and joined up with German Infantry
units to engage American troops that were advancing into Germany. This WW II veteran and his fellow veterans were like a living history book. Sounds like you have a great collection of military items and it's good that you have kept them. I have the MP brassard,
duty MP white hat and class A Khakis I'm wearing in my RP profile page photo which was
taken on July 4, 1969 in Germany. The MP duty white hat was retired by the Army in the 1980's and those class A Khakis were also retired. Good meeting you here on RP.
