On January 4, 1989, the US Navy aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy was sailing through the Mediterranean Sea with numerous aircraft from its air wing aloft for training exercises and patrol missions — a common practice while carriers are at sea.
At 11:55 a.m., one of those planes, an E-2C Hawkeye airborne early warning and control aircraft, detected two Libyan Air Force MiG-23s taking off from an air base in northeastern Libya and heading toward the carrier.

In an interesting turn of events, Muammar Gaddafi was actually working with the Bush 43 Administration to prevent islamic terrorist groups from setting up shop in North Africa under GWOT. He provided logistical and intelligence leads. In January/February of aught four, a Navy C-40A Clipper from VR-59 flew a diplomatic mission to Tripoli to bring a US delegation to negotiate a deal with the Libyans. It was the first US Flagged aircraft to land in Libya since the 1969 civil war when Gaddafi took control. I was originally scheduled to be on that Mission. but was kicked the day of the flight for a Reservist. I had already preflighted, loaded the geedunk and stowed my bags! The Sailor that opened that hatch would have possibly been me. Man was I pissed.
