The US military and the conflicts it served in certainly did change what Americans ate and drank. The Civil War made coffee more popular, as it was one of the standard ( and often the most palatable) rations served. WW1 made Corned Beef in a can popular and WW2 introduced Spam... and LOTS of it to Americans. To this day Hawaii still considers spam a delicacy. Great advances were made in food preservation, shipping and dehydration (think of powdered milk, eggs and instant coffee and dehydrated instant potatoes)
Defense department scientists researched and developed ways to get high calorie foods to troops, and later used this knowledge to help prevent famine in post war Europe.
Speaking of Spam it is said that after the war Dwight Eisenhower wrote a note to the Hormel company who had developed spam as a cheap way for American Housewives to stretch their food budget during the depression. He said that Spam was an essential part of the GI's diet. He closed by saying " I just wished you hadn't sent SO MUCH of it. Today unwanted E-Mail is called "spam"...

Don't forget the mini Tabasco bottles in MREs--I don't know a single combat arms vet who doesn't use the stuff regularly on everything! Best business contract Tabasco ever signed
