Once upon a time seeing was believing. Would anyone say that today? Who needs botox, plastic surgery and all the rest when they have Photoshop. Still, it's intriguing to look at PPP (pre-Photoshop) Photos and see the common man as well as the exalted and the heroic. These photos truly are time machines. [BTW, if you watched the series "Hell on Wheels", you may recognize the markings of one of the female characters in that show who had been abducted by Indians and marked by the tribe, when you see the photo of Olive Oatman that appears in this article]

It was the art of it's time CPT Jack Durish, in my view... Photography was the new, & exciting media in those times... It is both the same & different in today's time... Photography is still a favorite "still" medium, and the subjects (at least the female ones) just wear less, more makeup, are generally more seductive! Makes on the other hand are no longer the stoic images they once we're! Today they are the virile males females desire! Is it all about sex or is it all about money ,& control? What say you folks,?

Excellent article. It is funny that they only used one quote from her essay On Photography. She was not so praiseworthy for the most part. People never smiled in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were more more serious. Today everyone smiles like an idiot.
