In 1946, the U.S. Supreme Court banned segregation in interstate bus travel, but for years many states refused to abide by the law. On 4 May 1961, the freedom riders left Washington, D.C., in two buses and headed to New Orleans.
I remember seeing tis incident on the news CMSgt Al Nall. When I lived in Raleigh NC in 1970, there was still segregation. My HS didn’t become integrated until 1971.
