Strange shit happens in war. This is one of those strange, deadly stories. My dad served on the Aleutian Islands. He was an artillery Sargent.
On Aug. 15, 1943, a massive Allied force assaulted a North Pacific island at the height of World War II. A joint force of 34,000 American and Canadian troops, supported by warplanes and naval bombardment, moved inland through frigid and unforgiving terrain searching for occupying Japanese forces.

Hard to believe the allies were unaware the island had been evacuated. But evidently they were.

My late father in law served in the Aleutians in supply, helped do mess runs, and had a few running fire fights with the Japs.

My dad never talked about it except to say he was in a Artillery unit. Where I worked we had guards at the gate entrance. I was leaving one day and the guard asked me if I was related to SGT Keith Bodine. I told him he was my dad. He asked me if he was in the Aluetian Islands. I told him he was. He told me my dad was the meanest son-of-a-bitch he ever met in the Army. I turned around and said you don't know the half of it.
