I believe they are off base though.
Many who voted for him were aware of his character, but sought protection from a leftists ideology that is believed to be worse for the country; to send an outsider who has administration and business acumen to build us back up from the last 8 years.

I wonder if someone "nice" could fare as well against the establishment that the Left has constructed in Washington? President Reagan was nice. Even his opposition liked him and he fell short. He preached against Big Government but accomplished little in paring it down. He accomplished great things in restoring America's confidence and he brought the Soviet Union to its knees.
