In 1994 Californians voted and passed Proposition 187; Known as the Save Our State initiative. It would have establish a state-run citizenship screening system and prohibit illegal aliens from using non-emergency health care, public education, and other services in the State of California. Voters passed the proposed law at a referendum by a 59% to 41% majority despite Bill Clinton urging Californians to reject Prop 187. Passage of Proposition 187 reflected state residents' concerns about illegal immigration into the United States. Not so surprisingly, activists on campuses, churches, and ethnic communities in California and across the country rallied to express opposition to Proposition 187. The law was challenged in a legal suit and found unconstitutional by a federal district court. The people had spoken and but the court prevailed, and it's been downhill in CA ever since. Now Governor Brown wants to make CA a sanctuary state, and activists want CA to secede from the Union. If I recall, the War Between the States (Civil War) was fought over similar States Right issues. Who do you suppose would run for President of California? Beginning 2017-2018, Californians are being hamstrung with a series of new gun and ammo restrictions that are draconian, while other states have passed, and/or considered loosing restrictions on guns and ammo.
This map shows the margin by which Prop 187 passed. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see that the portion in red represents where 41% of the votes came from in 1994. Today, that margin extends well into the most populated metropolitan areas of Southern CA. What is represented in green are those of us who literally have no say. California isn't looking so golden these days.
