So, first, I saw this link in someone else's post this morning, but could not find it again when I went back to look. If an admin wants to merge this post with theirs, no issues here. But I did have some additional thoughts that I felt needed to be shared.
For my friends who are in, or considering being in, the IRR, please note that there have been some seismic changes in the program over the last 12 months. I cannot predict what the future holds (well, I can, but my track record is no better than anyone else's).
The following link is written in rather bland Army prose, but right now:
- NO ability to do AT (I'm sure there are waivers, based on needs of the Army)
- NO ability to do IDT for pay (Note the exclusive discussion of points-only)
- However, you do get auto-enrolled in max coverage SGLI despite being in a no pay due status, so you've got that going for you....
- NO ability to get points for correspondence courses (this change actually applies across reserve components, and was effective sometime last spring)
- NO ability to get a record APFT on IDT Status. You basically need to be be ordered to ADT to do an APFT. W. T. Actual F?
- NO credit for even one drill period for a PHA (paid or points)
- You do not qualify for the IDT travel program. Period.
I've been IRR before, and will likely be again for at least some amount of time. It's a valid status that sometimes makes sense. These changes shrink the window where it makes sense, IMO.
Given that we are doing the "drawdown" game now, it's not surprising. But as someone once said, "knowing is half the battle."
