Great read, but also not surprising at all. In reality things haven't changed much, but with today's technology they probably don't need as many feet on the ground as back then.

That was pretty interesting and at the time I seems neither the US, Canada or UK was prepared for that type of activity from the USSR but it was present for sure. With the USSR spreading out and trying to build a power base and secured information on weapons systems these nations were all targets for the theft of that type of technology. Even during WWII the Russians under Stalin were stealing and reverse engineering Western Technology one prime example was the American B29 which was they stole after three of those bombers had made emergency landing on Russian airfields, they released the crews but kept the aircraft and reproduced them exactly. That was just one example and Agents from the USSR were all over the US, Canada and UK to obtain more information on technology they could use themselves. Hiding those Agents within Embassy staffs sure wasn't uncommon either although not the only place they might be hidden. Often the USSR Agent knew who the Agents were from the US, Canada and UK and the reserve also was true once an awareness came about of these facts during the cold war. Don't even think that isn't still going on ,it is !
