India has been buying Russian military equipment for decades - pretty much since the British stopped manufacturing arms in quantity. The T-90 is a sizable upgrade from their Chieftan and T-72s - the bulk of their armored forces.

India has no commitment to buying US arms considering we are friends with their enemy, the Pakistanis ( I tend to trust the Indians far more).
