I think this is being way overblown. Looking back into history, we use phrases as "front lines" "flanks", "rear", and a ton of other phrases to tell folks where we were at a certain time. Women have often been near or IN the "front lines", in or near the "flanks", and damn near anywhere else a male Soldier has been. I follow a lot of the popular Vet pages on FB, and I listen to the Benning Boys say how they're the "ONLY" ones who see battle, and listen to the rah rah stories, even on occasion talk smack to one or a ton of them. Once you question or make a logical argument with some of these FB "grunts" you have a whole herd to deal with. But define "front lines", a "flank" could be the immediate area to my right or left. Define "rear". Not sexually or anatomically, but where is the "rear"? Is it Read D, the large FOB or JSA that everyone seems to have never been on, but know intimately? I would wager today and bet anyone on this site a FREE read this FREE UNLIMITED ROUNDS OF TAP WATER ON MY TAB, they cannot define any of those and tell me a woman wasn't there. Long gone are the long skirmish lines, great Armies and Navies fighting in battles that will be talked about 200 years later. Now you don't know if the person you're mentoring is going to be the same person you're going to shoot 20minutes later, or that person who is a new recruit actually a suicide bomber in disguise. No lines, no flanks, no rear....just here. Just here means that anything can happen to anyone at anytime. Gender and location doesn't matter. Women are there with us in the fight, always have been, but have due to sexism, and chauvinistic views relegated to roles that would make someone not in the know seem they're not warriors. I'm not going to say whether or not women will make good grunts. I think time will give the answer on that. I'm not going to say women will not make into Ranger bat. But I think they will. Soon. Will they be equals to their male peers, time will tell. You can have the most tabbed out PT stud super leader, get into combat and freeze. You get that quiet "looser" who is always being counseled for whatever who stands up, takes charge, and does what needs to be done. I believe women will get the chance past the MP Corps, Trans, and Aviation to prove their merit. I kinda look forward to the day a woman is in the White House being given the MOH. We already have a woman who earned her Silver Star (no one ever speaks of her), another who lost both of her legs in combat and is in congress, so to think they can't is dumb. I've had the pleasure of working with and for some outstanding female and male Soldiers, and am secure enough to say I'd follow some of them into hell and back. I know they'd bring me home. I think it's time for the rest of the services to stop looking at ways to say no, but ways to say YES without compromising standards, loosing integrity, and harming the services themselves.
