When a redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 election was released to the public and Congress on Thursday, the effects of Russian influence efforts through social media became clearer.
Part of the information in the report included examples of material that Russian trolls used, and one particular image stood out to Ronnie Hipshire, a retired coal miner in West Virginia.
On Page 31 of the Mueller report, Hipshire saw a photo of his father, Lee, a coal miner who died of complications from black lung disease, on a poster for a "Miners for Trump" rally in Pennsylvania. The Russian troll farm called the Internet Research Agency had used the photo, without the family's permission, for a pro-Trump poster.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - The Russian media is going full bore on the Mueller report having exonerated Russian interference, now Russia will have great relations with the US and POTUS, blah, blah, blah. Even better, they are running nothing but Fox News and Sean Hannity to back up their news. Meh.

They have a Lot of Experience with Disinformation and they have only gotten better with it over time. I still laugh when I Remember the Lady with the Sexy Voice on Radio Moscow Mocking President Ford.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - We still watch RT but usually only for "The Ring of Fire" because Mike Papantonio is so spot on with the various legal issues, especially tort law. But the RT news just makes me shake my head with the amount of disinformation it contains. Although I do like to see what they are spewing.
And Fox News has been following the Russian disinformation tactics for a long time. Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch really doubled down in that area. They saw how it worked and simply applied it here. It used to be that actual "news" wasn't "commentary", but the way in which "news" and "commentary" have now merged into "newsentary" is annoying. Probably scarier is that most people don't know how to sort one from the other. That doesn't help democracy.
