SN Greg Wright Is there no civilian equivalent of an OPS Center that tracks all maritime ships and assets nearby? It would seem like it would be beneficial to have a central place to call in for ground truth data and help in emergencies, rather than calling the corporate offices... probably legal issues involved, but they probably pale in comparison to losing a ship and crew...

Every US Port has a VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) ran by the CG. They perform much the same functions as air traffic controllers do. The CG additionally has regional OPS centers like you describe. You hope to never have to talk to the OPS centers, but there's been two inadvertent EPIRB activations in my career (not by me!) and they were on the radio within a minute or so both times.

SN Greg Wright - Now I remember them. We were called by one in Bermuda. We were sailing on 44' sailboats back to Annapolis, and they received an EPIRB in our squadron. We pulled the batteries on all of them and they still had an active alarm from one registered to our sailboat. We chalked it up to the Bermuda Triangle Curse...
