We were always told to treat any weapon as if it were loaded and to never point it at anyone unless you plan to kill them.

Most tragedies like this are victims of careless gun handling. I’m so old, NRA gun safety and rifle marksmanship class was school sanctioned, after class activity. This is unthinkable for anyone trained in gun safety. Especially a trained active duty member of the armed forces. Recklessly stupid with a total disregard for the safety of others.
