Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on January 20, 1981 that minutes after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as the 40th president of the United States, the 52 U.S. captives held at the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran, were released, ending the 444-day Iran Hostage Crisis.
FYI, I was getting ready to go to Germany for my initial assignment to 1/52 Infantry Battalion. After I got there I was able to purchase a Dodge Omni without catalytic converter that had been destined to Iran but was diverted based on the hostage crisis. I picked up the car at Bremerhaven and drove it to Bamberg in the spring of 1981.
