Not sure I understand why you would destroy the escape routes. That leaves the enemy no option, but fight to the death. When you are trying to separate the enemy from civilians, you have the wrong mentality for that strategy. They are fighting to the death while your forces are following rules?

the outcome is decided, the only question is when will the IDF win. The cut off supply and reinforcements weeks ago. They took a lot of the area already. ISIS is degraded and fighting desperately to survive. They will not make it out of Mosul alive.

The forces in Mosul may not want to leave there alive depending on the last orders they received or their commitment to the fight. As it was pointed out in a previous response, this fight to the death strategy laves no room for surrender.

Actually Joshua - that is not the true case. The encirclement has not occurred as of yet - nor has Tel Afar been attacked to the west. The outcome is far from decided - while we may be wanting victory, round ! of the campaign went to IS in their stopping the Iraqi Army cold and wrecking the force we spent a year training up. Round two will be something strait out of a WWI campaign or closer to Stalingrad and the very government of Iraq is at stake in winning it with a force that is now quantity vs quality... http://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/campaign-mosul-december-13-19-2016

LTC Eric Udouj I could very well be wrong here. I follow Iraqi news online and they are overly optimistic pretty often. I no longer get any sort of intel briefs so my source is at best flawed.

Best spots to see actual info is the link gave you above - and at Small Wars Journal. Too often we now produce optometrist message for ourselves that fails to say that victory is far from certain.

Surprise, right? Little hint... Keep your eyes open for EFPs... returning to a theater near you... It worked so well for them last time, why should they change?
