I have no sympathy for those who enlisted into an organization whose apex act is going to war.

COL Ted Mc
MAJ Ken Landgren - Major; Depending on the war and the methods being used to fight it, I have.
Admittedly, when someone joins after the war against "Enemy A" has already started and when the war against "Enemy A" is still being conducted using approximately the same methods as it was when that person joined, the sympathy declines sharply.
However, if that person DOES become "morally convinced that the war against 'Enemy A' is not a 'just war'" then I do believe that they have the obligation to take a principled stand on that point. That "principled stand" does NOT include "running away" but rather is limited to "refusing to participate in the war against 'Enemy A' and accepting the consequences of your actions/convictions".
In short, I'm much more favourably inclined to a soldier who says "Hell no! I won't go. Do what you want to to me, but I'm still not going to go." than I am to one who says "I don'wanna. I'm outtahere.".

Sorry Sir but to be candid, WTF would join the military if you don't agree with going to war? It's like becoming a firefighter & being afraid of fire. We don't want a war, we know how bad it is, but if a war comes along, that's what we are here for. Again, back to a fire fighter. It would be dumb to become one & think you will only get cats out of trees. I know, when my unit got tapped to go to Iraq, so many people & their families freaked out that they joined for the college money & to help people. Hey, it wasn't like it was in the fine print. It's the gamble we all take when we sign up. Just like any job, if you don't believe in it, it's not the place for you to be. I can understand the old draft dodgers but not the current people who volunteer, sign up, & then change their mind when they are called to do their ultimate job task.

I'm confused why would you join the military if you are opposed to War as a concept...it is the job of the military to fight Wars.

Just how has MSgt Stacy been misinformed, and why should he keep his opinions to himself while addressing an important issue on an open forum? Might I suggests you stick to your coloring books SGT David E.

So this guy voluntarily enlisted, and decided to flee the country rather than put in a 4187 for voluntary separation? This guy swore an oath to protect and defend out country against all enemies foreign and domestic. I know we've had issues with processing conscientious objector discharges, but at least try the right path before you do something cowardly like flee the country.
