The crisis in North Korea has reached a showdown countless times and the US has run away, given in, placated, lead from behind (in retreat), and generally done nothing. President Trump could do the same, but it appears maybe not.

NK is like a spoiled orphan child, and China is like an elderly foster parent that doesn't want to get involved in disciplining the child, unless that child is doing something directly against them.

China is North Korea's largest trading partner and gives aid to the North Koreans, who wouldn't be able to feed themselves without it. Certainly, the Chinese could use that as leverage in negotiating with the North Koreans.

Japan, likewise, has helped out North Korea with rice and staples but relations are frosty.
China would do well to take note of how Japan handles NK. They should engage with the North Koreans in similar manner to put pressure on NK to behave in a more civil, non-threatening manner.

What is China supposed to do that will not harm China, and why should they do it?

China could cut North Korea off economically and back out of their mutual defense agreements. That would definitely get the fat boy's attention.

I fail to see the crisis here. They fire one. We shoot it down. We stack aircraft from 2,000 to 50,000 feet and unleash hell. I'm sure we know a whole lot more about where all the important people, military formations, and everything else are than anyone thinks we do. People talk about NK like it's hiding under a lead dome that we can't see into. I'd be willing to guarantee we know exactly where we're going to blow things up should the time come and I'd also be willing to bet that it would make the shock and awe in Iraq in '03 look like a pop warner football scrimmage game.

I can think of three real problems. The first is the shear number of NK emplacements along the border and in close proximity to the more than 25 million people living in Seoul. The second is the number of NK infiltrators in the south. And finally the population of North Korea is similar to that of Japan during WW2, in that they are very unlikely to give up without the Emperor or in the case the Great Leader telling them to put down their weapons. This means that if a shooting war starts, the south's initial casualties could be in the Hundreds of Thousands.

One big crisis, the impact on the people of South Korea. All this talk about China, US, Russia but until the S. Koreans have a vote it doesn't matter what the US says.

Neary 20 million people are under the reach of North Korean Artillery and most of that artillery is extremely well dug, and only a fool would assume that the artilery will not be firing Chemical weapons , Shock and Awe works great against an army that is mostly in the open in the sabdbox, it is a lot less effective against a army that can travel almost to its objective without showing up about ground , in really terrainand mi after the first day mixed in with a huge number of allied civilians

Now many million allies would IOU consider acceptable losses, My number would eb Small because my in-laws live there as does my youngest son,

Not to mention is it goes nuke you will be killing Japanese wholesale also.

It is all so simple if you do not care how many die.

On what basisu do you assume we know where everything important is, defectors, even high ranking military folks say that no one outside a select few knows much outside of of narrow lanes. savagely murderous paranoiacs with no limits on the internal power are very good at keeping secrets. When even beind suspected of disloyalty can get you fed to hundred dogs or blown apart by automatic cannon people tend to restrict their curiosity .

BTW have you ever talked to a North Korean refugee?
