BLUF: When being shot at while in a car 9/10 the answer is to drive.

My first thought of this image and the video was on the tactics. Poor execution of ambush, mixed execution of response to ambush. Good on the police officer for his tenacity, fighting spirit and strength. Glad he survived.

Tactically: the first answer to ambush is to not get shot, second is get out of the kill zone, if you cant move, establish fire superiority, then attack into the fire.

The cop skipped the first option of moving out of the kill zone, relying first on cover (inside the car) then on attacking into the attack, driving out of the line of fire then turning around may have improved chances.

EDIT: to better reflect my view I changed 'bad' reaction to ambush to 'mixed' given mix of good (take cover and return fire) with bad (failure to use mobility first.) And added BLUF for simplified tactical recommendation.

I am a retired police officer and when I saw the pictures of Officer Jesse Hartnett getting out of his police car and start chasing the “ALEDGED NOT RELATED TO ISLAM SHOOTER” (Bovine fecal material!!!) after taking three hits he starts chasing the shooter down it was the bravest thing I have seen.

Mayor Jim Kenney said the attack "In no way shape or form does anyone in this room believe that Islam or the teaching of Islam has anything to do with what we've just seen on that screen," the mayor said. A member of Congress who is the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security says he believes the shooter of a Philadelphia Police officer early today was carrying out orders from the Islamic State.
Texas Rep. Mike McCaul, according to Fox News Insider, says that it is clear the shooter hears ISIS' message. “When you look at the Internet activity coming out of Raqqa, Syria, into the United States every day – 200,000 tweets per day – the message is clear,” said McCaul. That message is to “‘kill military, attack military installations, and kill police officers, It’s in my judgment that this individual’s carrying out these directives – these orders, if you will – coming out of Raqqa, Syria, from ISIS.”
Philadelphia Police said this morning that the shooter had confessed to carrying out the crime and doing so "in the name of Islam," while also pledging allegiance to the Islamic State. However, police did not go so far as to say that Archer was working directly with ISIS or any other foreign group.
