LTC Eric Udouj The Philippines has enough problems without ISIS> They really are the scourge of the earth, ISIS I mean. Like an itch that won't go away, keep scratching at it just makes it worse.

Agree - but IS (ISIS is not the global brand) has the majority of the Jihadi groups in SE Asia pledged to them now - and with returnees from the jihad in Syria returning - they have ability to be much more than a mere itch - and key areas to watch are Southern Philippines, Malaysia, Southern Thailand, and Bangladesh.

Mindanao & other southern islands have been muslim for centuries ... possibly longer than the north has been catholic... this conflict is not new, the names have changed

I would disagree with you on the conflict not having changed - for the old conflict is there but things have changed in the ARM on Mindanao ... and are changing. The change is in the degree of outside influence now occurring with ASG - far more than AQ ever provided. That internationalized it with the call going out to fight in the PI instead of going to Syria to make the jihad.

It is in how we communicate with other that has changed - and as such so has the terrorists ability to communicate well beyond their own borders that at one time limited them to being stuck on Jolo or in the ARM.

Cell phones, air travel, lax/nonexistant security, sympathetic nation-states, and general apathy by those not directly affected... the underground's best weapons. May have to look at Mao & Guevara in a new light.
