Capt Dwayne Conyers his story is legendary and Iconic, as A former Drill Sergeant, I used to train Soldiers at Fort Benning, GA at Cashe Villiage and a motivational speech would pump the Privates up for training. Hopefully it will come to past with Veteran Support.

The problem is that the Medal of Honor went from an award mostly given to living soldiers to a posthumous award. Statistically it is now for the first time a award mostly for the deceased. If you look at the statistics on all valerous and top awards there has been a steady trend and that trend is to downgrade. I think this stems from two causes. One the period between Viet Nam and any other major war was a lengthy one. During that period few were given and I think the services got used to the fact that few would be given. Perhaps there is an irrational fear of the heavily decorated Junior Enlisted Soldier or Lieutenant. I also think that career soldiers in the longest war period in Americas history have changed the paradigm. Soldiers serving in this conflict ridden period will inevitable service in many conflict zones earning multiple campaign awards. Personally I have no problem with the fact that a SM serves that they would be recognized but some in leadership are clearly seem uncomfortable with the "number of awards being earned. Again aside from emotive reasons there is not good cause to restrict earned recognition but in a period of sustained multiple conflicts service members can end up being heavily decorated by serving in multiple conflicts and apparently that makes some folk unfortunately very uncomfortable.
