What's "changed" is that in the 90's, we didn't have social media. Back then, you didn't feel like a terrorist, or a "rogue" government agency was going to drop by in the middle of the night. Most people felt it was "safe" to walk the streets before sundown and that the only form of security you really needed was a locked door, and maybe a weapon in a locked box in the closet.
Now, we are constantly inundated with "posts" claiming that ISIS has training camps on US soil, jihadists are hunting down OIF/OEF vets on Facebook, and that the Government is making "lists" of potential "domestic terrorists"...
...it has everyone thinking worst-case scenario, and planning accordingly.
I actually used to be one of those people that felt a firearm wasn't appropriate "daily wear" in a civilized, free nation. My views have changed. Back then, I didn't see anything "wrong" with banning certain weapons, because the people I knew who owned weapons, didn't have fully-automatic rifles and grenades, and I couldn't see any reasonable need for owning body armor if you lived in the 'burbs. Now, any time someone says "gun control", I can't escape the image of some sickly, thin, pale skinned California or New York politician running around with the "ruler of State" eager to slap everyone's hand whilst screaming, "You brute...you brute...your brute!"
We've somewhat lost the barometer of common sense on both sides.

The US just sunk to the 11th "Freest" country in the world in 2015, down from 4th in 2008.
And don't even look at the economic freedom list in that one we are like 29th or worse (iirc).
