This article doesn’t tell me much information. For all we know this is some retired MCPO calling his buddy on the board and putting a word in for his E-8 buddy, which I don’t see an issue with. We need a lot more great references and performance Eva’s can’t tell the whole story. I will reserve judgment here until a better article comes out.

I’ve never been on a board admittedly. I have Spent the bulk of my career In the army guard and the good ol boy system is synonymous with the guard. Maybe someday I will be on a board and learn if this is taboo. What’s your experience Chief?

E-9s should not be on selection boards for E-9s. We are a relatively small community and most know of someone up for the MCPO positions. As I recall long ago, it was always Commissioned Officers that made the final call on MCPO promotions. Since I was selected first time up, I am partial to them.
