Thank you my friend COL (Join to see) for posting the military.com article via apple.news. [This is my fourth attempt to post my response.] 'It Will Be a Long Time Before Soldiers Get the M4 and SAW Replacements' — Military.com

What Major Ammo & Rifle Change Is Coming To The US Military?!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFXothsNNNM

Spiral development capabilities enable design to be be updated based on operational requirement development including threat assessment.
1. The rollout of the Squad Automatic Weapon replacement and M-4 Rifle replacement will no doubt be incrementally distributed based on the prioritization of units, specialties, and sufficient munitions, distribution, maintenance capability from unit through depot, training of maintainers, initial entry trainer [drill sergeant], then trainees.
2. I expect One Station unit Training [OSUT] would be utilized to enable a select group of trainees to be trained on these weapons on the basis of their initial post-graduation unit assignment. That would enable equipped units to receive trainees who already have familiarity with the weapons.
3. No doubt these weapons are being tested now and certain specialties, units are using a variant of these for operational test bed and operational use in certain low density, high demand force capabilities.

US Army M4 replacement Military NGSW Program Explained
The Next Generation Squad Weapon program is a US military program that will replace the M4 and 556mm. The 6.8 x 51mm promises to bring higher fire power and new features to every rank and file US Military grunt out there. Variable 1 to 6 x options will give soldiers the ability to hit targets out to 800 meters with higher energy on target.

The biggest hold-up is the government spinning up ammo production, because the Army just "had" to have a new and different caliber.

When I went to basic training in 1994, the M60 Pig was still in use. When I went on homeland security Noble Eagle 3 in 2003, we still had the M60 even though the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan were now Fielding the m240 Bravo to replace that same weapon system. When I went to Iraq in 2004, selective soldiers were also given the M14 rifle to use as sniper rifles. These were not actual sniper teams but just they just mixed and matched the M4, the M16, the M249 squad automatic weapon, the M14 and the m240 Bravo. My point is that you'll probably still see the weapon system and the inventory for quite some time.

We still have the M2 50 calibre machine gun. I guess it's the longest serving weapon system in the US Arsenal since 1922.
