Remember this well, and being from New England, like President Kennedy, I also did not understand the depth of Southern racism. Took me going to school in the south 2 years later to get some idea of it.

We have come a long way since 1962. In the northern United States around Idaho or Utah and in the western Canada, natives are considered second-class citizens. They assume that they steal, smoke dope, drop out of school and want opioids. Those who panhandle who are Native are cited and runoff by police. White people who Panhandle are left alone. Native kids who run amok in the front yard are interviewed and taken away by social workers while Hillbillies who do the same thing or left alone.

This may not apply in the south-west or in the east of the United States, but it sure applies here in much of Canada. Here is an example from a Canadian college student and the crap she has to deal with. This happens all the time.
