Thanks for mentioning and honoring Joseph Patrick "Joe" Kennedy Jr. who may well have been the better Kennedy son SGT John " Mac " McConnell among the four of them.
Even back in WWII the rich and powerful certainly pulled the strings in the democrat party and Joe Sr. was determined to be a king maker. It was more than ironic that JFK's reign as President was referred to as Camelot.
Kudos to US Navy land-based bomber pilot Joe Jr who was killed in action "while participating in a top-secret mission in 1944."

As I recall, he had orders to CONUS but volunteered for the mission on which he was killed. I believe it was a skip bomb on a dam, but his plane went down on the way to the target.

Lt. Kennedy was actually working with Operation Aphrodite and taking B-17 and B-24 bombers that were no longer fit for regular duty and turning them...or at least attempting to...into early versions of cruise missiles. The idea behind the program was too far ahead of the technology of the time and pretty much an epic failure. More allies were killed than Germans the attempts to make it work.

Operation Chastise was a purely RAF operation and did have some limited success...especially because the majority of the casualties down river of the dams, that were taken out, were Allied POWs.

MSG Brad Sand, thank you for the correction. My memory is getting a bit fuzzy these days, but now I remember the drone program.

As I recall, he was to take the drone off and then parachute out so that the plane could be guided into the target by operators in chase planes. Did I remember that part correctly?

Yes Sir...well at least as much as we can believe the reports on a secret program? He and his co-pilot were supposed to parachute out but the explosives packed in the plane went off while both men were still on the plane.
