Julien Alfred won St. Lucia its first-ever Olympic Games medal. And not just any medal — gold — against the favorite in the 100-meter event.
Alfred, 23, outsprinted Team USA's Sha'Carri Richardson on Saturday night on a rainy track, accelerating toward the finish line. I'm still stunned with the 'comeback' performance of the Netherlands team in the 4x400m relay. When Kaylyn Brown took off like a rabbit in the last leg and went from "just ahead of the Belgium team" to open a commanding lead, the robust female was told to start warming up her vocal chords.
Then Femke Bol, who was almost a full two seconds behind in fourth place, channels her inner cheetah to Kaylyn's rabbit, and in 20 seconds moves up to second place, and overtakes Kaylyn within a dozen feet of the finish line.
