IMO, a background check for a private sale is unenforceable and will not keep firearms out of the hands of criminals because not everyone will obey the law.
Even if local law enforcement conducts the check for free, it requires contact with a law enforcement agency. Such contact, and the information gathered could be misused by folks with an anti-gun agenda.
In fact, I posit it would result in an increase in the number of firearms stolen due to criminal elements wanting to conceal their acquisition of a firearm unlawfully. I say that without any evidence, but it is in keeping with the claims made in pro-universal background check articles.

"will not keep firearms out of the hands of criminals because not everyone will obey the law."

That may be true, but that is also true of all laws. Some people always speed. Does that mean we should not set speed limits? Of course not.

MSgt (Anonymous) I dont know anyone who wants to do away with the current checks, and don't see where I claimed so.
Wasn't an analogy, it was sarcasm, because I dont believe the numbers in the article. There is definitely nothing to support my comment that firearms thefts would increase due to a universal background check, since I made that up.
I'll work on making sure my sarcasm is more recognizable.
