Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on January 3, 1924 two years after British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discovered the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen near Luxor, Egypt, they uncovered the greatest treasure of the tomb–a stone sarcophagus containing a solid gold coffin that holds the mummy of Tutankhamen.

That find really advanced the study of ancient Egypt. The biggest problem in that field might be the pillaging of many of the ancient tombs of royalty and thereby nullifying the value in that tomb. The dryness of Egypt immeasurably preserves human remains and other artifacts. The tons of gold and precious jewels in the royal tombs served as a beacon for grave robbers to break in and spoil the site.
