At the climax of the first of my Nick Andrews books, I place my hero at the battle of Chipyong-ni. I studied the battle in great detail. One of the most interesting aspects of the units engaged there is that a French Foreign Legion battalion was attached to the American regiment that fought that battle. It was commanded by a French general who reduced his rank to LTC so he could lead that battalion. Ultimately, the film fails to mention that the battle at Chipyong-ni became known as the Gettysburg of Korea. The CCP would never again regain the offensive and was driven to the bargaining table
