White, brown, olive, black, or chartreuse ... "170,899 missing black children under 18 in the United States, more than any other category except for the white/Hispanic combined number of 264,443 ... is a lot of kids." I had not heard anything like those numbers before. It ought to be of concern to all of us, whether they are runaways, abductions, or whatever.

If this is, or is not, alarming depends a lot on why those children went missing.

The vast majority of missing children are a result of non-custodial parental or relative abductions. If they went missing for that reason, that's not good but not particularly unusual either. If there is a sudden uptick in the number of abductions of a particular demographic that does not appear to be a result of non-custodial parental or relative abductions, that would be alarming.
