When I read that Congress was considering naming a ship after the shooting victims Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, Sgt. Carson Holmquist, Lance Cpl. Squire “Skip” Wells, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith who were killed at the USN/USMC recruiting depot I was curious how so many people could be included in a ships names SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. Then I noticed this was a push for an expeditionary fast transport, previously called the joint high speed vessel, to be named after Chattanooga.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL there is no denying that the events in Chattanooga were tragic. There is no denying that it was a senseless act. There is no denying that it was a needless loss of life. There is no denying that the victims should have a memorial... In chattanooga. Naming a ship the Michael Murphy after Lt. Michael Murphy who gave his life in combat, and earned the Medal of Honor for his actions is understandable. This may offend some, but I do not agree with doing that for recruiters who were murdered in America. I am not saying that they didn't die in service to their nation, but I am saying that it was not a circumstance that warrants naming a ship after them.

Doesn't make sense to me. Naming it after the city would quickly lose any connection to the victims it was intending to honor. In fact, I doubt the general public would ever make that connection at all. I don't see how naming it after the city where someone was killed is honoring the person killed in the least.
