I had the honor of being served Sunday dinner by Tolstoi's daughter, Alexandra Tolstoy who fled to the US following the Bolshevik Revolution. She founded the Tolstoy Foundation and established a US version of their Russian estate: Yasnaya Polyana in Valley Cottage, NY. The Foundation was dedicated to saving "Old Russians" - the Old Believers. My Russian Professor at Boston University had defected from the Soviet military and was rescued from Sweden by Countess Tolstoy. He brought me and two other students to the Tolstoy Farm in NY for a Sunday over Orthodox Easter. She cooked and served us saying that her father's philosophy expected us to not require servants to do what we were perfectly capable of doing ourselves. We sat in the parlor after dinner and listened to her tell wonderful stories of her father and the literary greats who came to Yasnaya Polyana to pay homage to the great Leo Tolstoy. She became her father's literary heir and had helped her mother hand copy some of her father's manuscripts. An unforgettable character to say the least.
