I felt honored to read and discuss this poem with gifted 4th graders the day before Veterans' Day. I warned them in advance that I would probably tear up while reading. And I did. It was difficult to finish with that lump in my throat. Until Thursday, I did not realize that McCrae threw the poem away, but it was fished out of the rubbish bin and sent off to magazines...and finally published. Brilliant poem. So glad it was saved.

I'm surprised as I hand out poppies to people and accept their donations for the American Legion and VFW, at how many don't know the story

I remember as a child having been told the story by a relative and veteran of WWI.
