Wow, another brilliant “No swinging eagle s$&@!” moment brought to you at great expense by an overpaid group at the Pentagon that tells us what any platoon sergeant, squad leader, or lance corporal knows. The grunt companies fund with their bodies a wide variety of non combat things at each base they are set down upon. I well recall the meetings before each Oki deployment to decide who was going to fill the FAP levy (Fleet Assistance Program) when we got there. You know, vital things like checking out basketballs at the base gym. I had one Sgt friend who spent his whole year once as a lifeguard and ski boat driver at the Rec area on the north side of Oki. We’d lose some 15-20% of our troops, including NCOs at a time when we were st the very tip of the SHTF spear in the Far East. Of course, if the SHTF, they’d get yanked back and shoved into their platoons where they’d now become strangers. Chesty Puller’s ghost should kick the ass of whoever thought that up.

If a task force needs somebody with ranger training, it should get Rangers assigned. If an operation requires special operators, that's the way it should be set up. The wing nuts at the pentagon need to learn how to do their job better.
