One of the better quasi-listicles I've seen. In watching my wife talk about her co-workers and after attending a couple of their compay functions, this truism stood out in my head

"Cynicism and Idealism Coexist: In military culture, there is little discomfort in the coexistence of idealism and cynicism. In the Marine Corps, for example, a Marine might refer to his service as “The Suck” but he will readily die for its honor. In the civilian world, there is less tolerance for what would be seen as a 'bad attitude.'"

Excellent share Colonel. I think much of this also applies to company and field grade officers, as well as most any SNCO. "Leadership is not a function"...that truly sticks out. My experience leaving the service for the private sector was a brutal education in just how "little" the esoteric value of being a "leader" matters when marketing oneself. Ultimately, I had to spend a couple years re-building experience and "hard" skills to make a serious run at corporate "leadership", but it finally seems to taking root for me.
