Lance Cpl. Darius Evans served in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune from 1994 to 1998. For the last few weeks, he hasn’t had a place to call home.
Evans has been working temporary jobs but said after the holidays, finding a permanent position was difficult. While looking for a job, Evans lost his home.
“I’ve been staying with random people,” Evans said.
But someone else’s home isn’t always an option.
Evans has slept in a park. For a few days, he stayed in a tent with a group near New River before the police asked them to leave. Some nights, Evans just walks around so he won’t get in trouble for sleeping somewhere he’s not supposed to.
The Veteran Stand Down hopes to help men and women like Evans, veterans who fell through the cracks.
“(We) try to get vets back on track,” NC Works Disabled Veteran Outreach Specialist Gail Horn said.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs Many counties within states hire individuals to serve within a Veterans Service Office. In many cases these offices provide an exceptional service to veterans because most of the employees have served in the military. They act as an advocate at the state level for individual veterans trying to push a claim or an appeal through the federal process quickly. Thanks for the post.
