Lockheed Martin Syracuse lands $184M contract for Navy ship defenses

Lockheed Martin's plant in suburban Syracuse has landed a U.S. Navy contract worth $184.1 million to provide electronic systems that defend aircraft carriers, cruisers and destroyers from anti-ship missiles.

The Navy's end-of-year decision guarantees the Lockheed plant at Electronics Park in Salina will continue work on the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program, or SEWIP, through June 2021.

The Navy exercised its latest contract option on the Block 2 phase of SEWIP in the order announced Friday.

Lockheed's Salina plant had previously received at least $800 million in contracts for SEWIP Block 2 work. The systems provide Navy ships with early detection, analysis, threat warning and protection from anti-ship missiles.

About 23 percent of the work on the new contract will be performed on Lockheed's campus at Electronics Park in Salina, the Pentagon said. The local plant employs between 1,500 and 1,600 people.

Other plants that will perform large portions of work on the new contact are in Lansdale, Pa. (23 percent), Andover, Mass. (21 percent), Frankfort, N.Y. (9 percent), Hamilton, N.J. (7 percent) and Hauppauge, N.Y. (7 percent).
