As I see it the Lance Corporal did exactly what he was suppose to do. He was at attention, in the presence of the Commander in Chief; you are right...great discipline. He was wearing his cover because he is "under arms", in this case, the LCPL was actually armed. A duty belt in the Marine Corps is considered "under arms" (this is why Marine drill instructors can be covered in doors, Marines are always uncovered indoors). I don't think FOD, although a constant issue with jet intakes, is a hazard in this case. Marines do not salute uncovered...period.

CPT Jack Durish - I don't know about the expert thing CPT Jack...just customs and courtesies. The Corps has a zillion of them.

It is always interesting to see the differences in the services when it comes to things like this.

MSgt (Join to see) - The Navy also doesn't salute uncovered or indoors, unless they're under arms (which then, they'd be wearing a cover.)

Mr. Trump respects the troops, the Lance Corporal probably was disciplined for not saluting later.

The Lance Corporal did the correct thing, Marines do not salute uncovered. I bet his chain of command was very pleased with his demeanor and professionalism. If it were me, I would be crapping myself...the POTUS picked up his cover...twice, patted him on both arms. That is respect.
