Thanks TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that on May 3, 1810 Lord Byron AKA George Gordon swam across the Hellespont, a tumultuous strait in Turkey which is now called the Dardanelles.

Back in the early nineteenth century, Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire whose Sultan was the titular head of Islam. Lord Byron was an especially romantic figure who made too many liaisons and thus generated an enormous amount of gossip. His early death placed him as a heroic figure for Greece.
