Yeah, I'd heard the whole story, that one was obviously a real winner, clearly...sometimes, as I think about the story, it was kinda like FDR and Churchill being willing to use Stalin to stop Germany (I mean, ya gotta figure there are varying degrees of bad, even in world history involving dictators, I suppose)...sometimes, I guess the enemy of one's enemy can clearly, on exceedingly rare occasions, actually be a friend, I suppose, even though that one was obviously a real piece of work, you know? I was kinda blown away when I'd heard the whole story, and the extent to which that one was used...one wishes such things wouldn't be necessary, however, I guess they just inevitably are, unfortunately, at times, I suppose, however regrettable the need might be at that particular moment, I guess....

This deal has also has been described in a couple documentaries about Luciano. Seems like a win for the US, this article didn't mention it but besides using contacts in Italy to help the war effort he apparently also secured the cooperation of crime families controlling dock workers in the US.

Yeah, something that doesn't quite make into the mythological image of the mob is the question of why were dock workers creating a problem during a war in the first place?

SGT (Join to see) Very good question, although I believe before Pearl Harbor a lot of the country was anti-war and the mob with its ties to Italy didn't want to support efforts to harm Germany and it's Italian ally.
