His estate pays the bill. He has money for a fishing vessel which can be seized and liquidated. Aircraft maintenance and fuel cost are very expensive. A C-130 burns roughy 5,000 pounds of fuel every hour. These costs add up quickly with multiple aircraft working a rescue case. It’s got nothing to do with the salary of the crew members. His lawyer’s defense just doesn’t hold water.

This type of issue is very difficult.
When I was working at a Rescue Coordinarion Center in the early 80’s. With a lot of work, we were able to identify and have arrested a gentleman who got his ya-ya’s by calling in false emergency reports. He was court ordered to pay over $250,000 in restitution for the 20 false alarms he was found guilty of making. Last I checked he had paid less than $5,000.
