Better than the heavy, ineffective flak jackets we wore in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s.

CW5 Jack Cardwell
The Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV) provides much better protection than flak jackets. Worn them both neither comfortable!

Coming from a trauma ICU nurse that has worn both, I would rather have the flak vest. All this weight and worry about getting shot directly from a rifle while slowing my ability to run for cover does little for me when my ACH exposes my brainstem. My IOTV may stop a 7.62 round and I still die from shrapnel to most important part of my brain that regulates heart rate and breathing.

For some strange inexplicable reason we were never issued flak jackets in Vietnam,don’t know if it was Division or Unit decision or simply a call on the Company level,wish they made that call on Mr.Rucksack !
