Mass extinctions have helped many species get the upper hand. The mass extinction of the dinosaur helped mammals climb to the top. Maybe some day another mass extinction will help another species to the top.

There was a link to the actual article, it's actually readable, or was when I just tried it...that is obv quite novel, admittedly an aspect I jadmt considered, it was also quite extraordinarily detailed....

Dinosaurs originated ~245 million years ago (mya) but did not diversify until some time in the Late Triassic. Here, Bernardi and colleagues synthesize palaeontological and dated stratigraphic evidence to show that dinosaur diversification followed the Carnian Pluvial Episode 234–232 mya.
