The controversy over the massacre is still around. During Peiper's trial, it was determined that the troops actually involved were fallschirmjagers who had been "commandeered" by Peiper anf were riding on von Westernhagen's Tiger II's and were some distance back in the column. There was considerable question as to what degree Peiper actually had over these elements.
The trial illustrated that Peiper was largely convicted on the fact that he had served as Himmler's Adjutant, while there was no factual evidence that he participated, ordered, or condoned excesses committed by troops serving under his command.
As a note, armored warfare doesn't provide much opportunity for taking, or marshalling, prisoners of war. While I in no way condone such actions, I can understand the conditions that lead to such actions.

This should have been used as a reminder to our former President Bush 43 before he swallowed the judgment of lawyers that rendering and waterboarding were not violations of human rights and/or considered as torture. Once again the old is new again.
