Thanks for sharing the news SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL that retired Marine Gen. James Mattis is under consideration for Secretary of Defense.
According to the New York Times, the short list for Sec Def nominations consists of:
Tom Cotton Senator from Arkansas who saw combat in Iraq and Afghanistan as an Army infantry officer
Stephen J. Hadley National security adviser under George W. Bush
Duncan Hunter Representative from California and Marine reserve officer who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan
Jon Kyl Former senator from Arizona
My choices in order of priority are 1. Tom Cotton; 2. Duncan Hunter; and 3. Stephen J. Hadley.
I do not think a retired 4 star flag officer should be Sec Def for many reasons including the fact that he would be military [civilian leadership is important for objectivity over DoD. Military experience can be useful but it should not be the prime consideration.
